I liked the NIV (New International Version) which was a Gideon Bible.

Yes we may well be making you cry and feel ill, and maybe we are overwhelming you with info and opinion.
Just stick to the bible at first might be a reasonable suggestion though...
I read and studied the bible a great deal in my doubting phase and it was very helpful as reading just the bible in context (and comparing translations) was enough to see things were not right in JW land. I read the complete bible about 4 times, selected bible books and parts relevant to my research (607 bce date) many more times and the Gospel accounts a few more times on top. I wanted the JWs to be right as I had invested all my previous 40 years into it.
My point being here is that there is no short cut to research. I didnt take anyone elses word for it here, I had to see it for myself.

It's a journey. And some of it will be painful. (like accepting the fact you will grow old and die!)
Putting it bluntly for you: You are asking the wrong questions (sorry)...they may very well appear to you to be the right questions at THIS moment in time, but believe me when I say that you will look back on them in a year or two and see clearly that they were not the right questions at all.
Have a read of this thread to see the journeys some of us have taken and why:

Reasearch of the honest and meaningful variety (i.e truth is truth wherever you find it) ...can be VERY eye opening indeed!!

BRITISH dubbies - how to find out if the WT has applied for funding from the National Lottery?
by hamsterbait inin the same vein as asking why witlesses refuse to donate blood as a sin, yet they take the fractions.. illustration - the starving single jdub mother in a third world country.
her children are starving.
she cannot sell her body and commit commercial fornication.. so she goes to a prostitute neighbour: "would you sleep with this man, and then give me the money to feed my children?".

One reason for the negative stance re education is that at college / university you learn "critical thinking skills" ....That means you learn how to think more clearly and to analyse information more carefully and critically.
That is bad in WT land because you will start to see all the glaring holes and inconsistencies, ...hence they discourage it at every opportunity.

I remember that stupid "generation game" WT study in 1995, I found it gutting at the time and the alarm bells in my head rang. Shame I didnt do enough about researching my beliefs until another 13 years had gone by eh.
Stupid bloody cult.

yep take it SLOOOOW.... and keep your mouth shut! Keep this stuff to yourself while you work out what you want to do, otherwise you will just invite a whole lot of problems your way when you could do without that sort of agro. So take yer time and work thru this period of discovery.

Some of the contents of the letter seem a bit extreme, .... sounds more like the moves Scientology would pull than the WTS. I hope that is more than conjecture on his part.

Conquering A JW Fear
by EmptyInside ini'm watching a creepy movie.
in my jw days,i would label it demonized.
don't ask me how a movie can be demonized, but it can.. but,i must confess,i am still superstitious about such things.

I watched the Exorcist a few months back, that is something I would NEVER have done as a JW.
I have always had a deep aversion to all things occult, so always avoided those sort of films. I watched it with my new found eyes of freedom, it was pretty lame tbh.
